“Come and walk with me”
The 7 Churches Pilgrimage is a journey both physically and spiritually that is made each year after the Holy Thursday Mass. It is our response to Christ’s invitation to the disciples to pray with him in the Garden at Gethsemane. After finding them asleep the first time, Jesus asks them again to stay awake and pray with him one hour (Mt 26:40), as these are their last moments with Jesus before his death.
In this pilgrimage we walk to seven churches, seven altars of repose, to pray with our Lord as he journeys through the seven places where Jesus was taken between the last supper and his death at the crucifixion. Quite literally, we take this time to truly be present and walk with Jesus in his final moments leading up to his death - to put aside our own need for rest and sleep to stay awake in prayer with Him.
Will the Lord find you sleeping? Or awake and ready to carry your cross alongside him?
